NEW FIRE TRUCK HELENSBURGH FIRE STATION - TYPE 2 PUMPER

State Labor MP for Heathcote, Mr Paul McLeay, announced the arrival of a new $276,000 fire engine at Helensburgh Fire Station on 20 May. The custom-made fire engine incorporates the latest in firefighting equipment and technology - tailor made to respond to emergencies in the area.
It is a dual-cabin vehicle, allowing crews to communicate and discuss strategies on the way to a fire call. The vehicle has a high-pressure pump that supplies up to 3,000 litres of water each minute for fire fighting operations.
Everything on the vehicle is stored ergonomically so that firefighters can quickly and safely retrieve equipment at the scene of the fire.
“The new fire engine is a major investment in the local fire brigade and will mean that local fire crews will be able to get to an emergency faster,” Mr McLeay said.
Helensburgh Fire Brigade responded to 74 emergencies last year, including home fires, bush fires and motor vehicle accidents.
These crews worked in close co-operation with the Rural Fire Service to save many homes in this residential area during the devastating 2001 bushfires.
“It is vital that the crew has the best equipment to deal with fires and spills of hazardous materials in the community,” Mr McLeay said.
“The new Helensburgh Fire Engine is part of the Carr Government’s $72 million four-year program to upgrade the NSW Fire Brigades’ fire engine fleet.”
Helensburgh firefighters have received comprehensive training on their new vehicle, including:
• detailed demonstrations on its operation
• driving assessments, and
• individual familiarisation checks, before they began using it to respond to emergency calls.
Further details on the new fire engine are available on the Brigades’ website www.nswfb.nsw.gov.au - go to About the NSWFB/types of Vehicles (Type 2 Urban Pumper).
