Recently, beachside real estate moved further out of reach for ordinary families with the extraordinary sale of a fibro cottage at Coalcliff for $2 million.
Even the owners were amazed, with Sue Corbett saying she started to feel sick when bidding passed $1.5 million.
The beachside property is only partly renovated but its location is unparalleled: overlooking the Coalcliff tidal pool with views to Bald Hill escarpment and the south coast.
About 300 people attended the August 16 auction with up to 700 people inspecting the home during the sales campaign.
The new owners of the record-breaking property do not wish to be named, with real estate agents discounting a string of high-profile potential buyers, including Nick Whitlam, Nick Greiner and actress Miranda Otto.
Real estate agents say the new owners, from Sydney’s north near Wiseman’s Ferry, will use the property as a weekender.
