At the Illawarra Branch Awards of Excellence night held recently, Helensburgh Stanwell Park Surf Life Saving Club was awarded the Illawarra Branch’s Club of the Year. This was in recognition of the Club’s outstanding efforts in all aspects of Surf Lifesaving, including patrols, competition, officials, junior section, administration and fund raising. Out of the 17 clubs in the Illawarra Branch, this was a most prestigious way to finish our 95th year of service to Surf Lifesaving and the community.
Our Club also had 17 finalists in many categories, with Debbie Overell being successful as Age Manager of the Year, Ben Dowling as Junior Lifesaver of the Year and Bobo White was awarded Life Membership of the Illawarra Branch for his many years of service to the Branch.
The Senior Presentation night was held at the Helensburgh Workmen’s Club on 27 June. Fourteen members received their Bronze Medallions and 16 members received their Surf Rescue Certificates. Other major awards were Murray Dowling Patrol Member of the Year, and Geoff Coleman Club Member of the Year.
The Surf Club AGM was held on 27 July at the Surf Club. There were two major changes to the Executive Committee with Don Harris being elected President and Grant Dezius taking over the role of Club Captain.
David Anger stepped down as President after five years of exceptional service to the Club, and Mark Thompson retired after 11 years as Club Captain, giving outstanding service to Life Saving and the Club, well above what was expected of this position. We congratulate and thank David and Mark for their efforts and wish them well for the future.
The new season is just about here. We are asking that any new or past members who would like join the Club attend the registrations days as listed above or alternatively come and see us at the Surf Club on any Sunday at 11am.
