Lions salute district’s heritage at annual Village Fair Spread a blanket at Charles Harper Park and enjoy two days of entertainment with live music and performances at the Lions Club Village Fair on October 30 and 31 from 9am to 4pm. Eat delicious food, Christmas shop at a variety of market stalls, have fun on the carnival rides and go on a Harley tour. Kids, get your face painted or sport a temporary tattoo, pat the animals on Saturday or bring your favourite pet to the pet show on Sunday. Helensburgh Lions Club secretary Libby Cross said the theme of this year’s Village Fair was The Coalface - Our District’s Heritage and all money raised would go towards children with specific needs. “We are looking particularly at our local kids who are living with major health problems such as the 12-year-old girl with a hole in her heart and others suffering major birth defects,” said Libby. This year’s parade will take place on Sunday, 31 October, commencing from Frances Street at 3:30pm. As in previous years, the route will run from Frances, down Walker Street, around the roundabout and left into Parkes Street finishing up adjacent to the Police Station in Waratah Street. In the past participants have included the Cobb & Co coach, the Illawarra Scottish Pipers, United Mineworkers Band, Railway Band, vehicles from all our local Fire Services (both town and rural), Police vehicles, Surf Life Saving Clubs with their boats, local mineworkers, sporting organisations (such as football, netball and cricket clubs), vintage and classic cars and motorcycles, kindergartens and pre-schools, dancing schools, Girl Guides and Brownies, Scouts and Cubs, military vehicles, local businesses, the Workmen’s Club, the Bowling Club and members of Pony Club bringing up the rear (for obvious reasons!). Our record parade stretched for more than 1km! This year we are looking forward to welcoming all the above plus more, including the Southern Stars baton twirlers who will follow behind the Railway Band. If you are interested in participating, please contact Mike or Vicky Bashford on 4294 8275 or e-mail mbashers@aol.com. You may wish to enter a flat bed truck with a display onboard, an unusual vehicle, your business vehicle (free advertising) or a pedestrian display (for example, the dancers and baton twirlers) - the choice is yours. You may also wish to incorporate the theme of this year’s fair in your entry. There are cash prizes for first, second and third - don’t delay, enter today.
