Stanwell Park Helensburgh SLSC
The Australian Surf Titles were held at Kurrawa Beach on the Gold Coast from 17 to 20 March. The number of competitors from Helensburgh Stanwell Park grew again this year with 30 of us from U15 to Masters competing both on the sand and in the water.
Our three Masters competitors included Peter Burke, Karen Burke and Tania Potter. We came home with two Australian medals. Daniel Robberds scored a silver in the U19 Flags and Christopher Astill a silver medal in the U15 Sprint. Daniel came fifth in the U19 Sprint and Christopher came fourth in the U15 Flags. Adam Thompson came sixth in the U15 2km run.
Our relay teams did well with the U15 male and female relay teams making the finals and the U19 male and female relay teams making it through to the semis. The U19 and 21 boaties also did well in the huge surf which took out many boats. Nathan Thompson was injured during one of the boat races and we are hoping he will be back to his usual cheeky self soon.
Thank you to everyone from our club who has officiated at carnivals again this year, particularly Mark Thompson, Bobo White and Jeff Lucke.
As this is the end of the surf season, we would like to thank our sponsors, with particular thanks to Daryl Ryman, Helensburgh Workmen’s Club and Metropolitan Coal for their generous donations. Other sponsors we would like to thank include Helensburgh Lions Club, Helensburgh Masonic Centre, United Mine Workers Federation, PRD Nationwide, Dr Annette Beaufils, G&D Mercer Builders, Coastline Real Estate and Midge Palmer.
